Lake Lure Trail Cleanup Following the Storm
The following is a summary of the trail cleanup efforts following the storm last week.
Buffalo Creek Park:
Michael Smith, a Lake Lure volunteer, went out on 8/19 and removed 8 trees of various sizes from the Buffalo Creek Park trail. Several more trees have fallen since then, including 1 large tree that was completely blocking the trail on the South side.
On 8/21 and 8/22, Robin Worcester (Trail Boss for Buffalo Creek Park) walked the entire trail and sent us a trail assessment of all the areas that need repair. We had a workday this morning (Tuesday, August 24th) to remove the remaining trees and repair erosion issues caused by the heavy rain. The trail is clear and in good shape now.
Weed Patch Mountain Trail:
A large tree has fallen and blocked the Weed Patch Mountain Trail at marker 5. It caused a boulder to slide partly onto the trail. We have reports of 6 other trees down on Weed Patch trail, as well, and are working to get them all removed quickly.
The plexiglass for the kiosk at the beginning of the Weed Patch Mountain Trail has also been damaged. We are ordering a new piece of plexiglass and will have it replaced soon.
Dittmer-Watts Nature Trails:
Staff scouted the Dittmer-Watts Nature Trails on Monday, August 23rd and found several trees down on the trail. There are also some spots that will need some minor erosion repair from the heavy rain.
We plan to have the trees removed later today (Tuesday, August 24th), and will fix the minor erosion issues as soon as possible.
