The Town of Lake Lure is seeking qualified applicants for a Development and Environmental Review Specialist. This position performs technical, administrative, and investigative work in the enforcement of land development, environmental regulations, and other provisions of the Lake Lure Code of Ordinances. The work includes responding to public inquiries, reviewing, permitting, and enforcing Town Ordinances.  The ideal candidate will be able to work independently with minimum supervision. Independent judgment and initiative must be exercised in making determinations for land development, environmental regulations, and other requirements and provisions of the Code of Ordinances. Considerable tact is required when assisting contractors, engineers, architects, property owners, and the general public with zoning, nuisance, lake structures, floodplain, erosion control, tree protection, and other enforcement-related matters.

Extensive knowledge of planning and development, policies, and legal requirements related to NC General Statutes is preferred.  In addition, thorough knowledge is needed with regard to the local, state, and federal laws, regulations, zoning, land use, ordinances, codes, and principles and practices of land use planning. The incumbent must be skilled in the use of standard office equipment including a personal computer and knowledge of software packages such as (Microsoft Office Professional, ARC/GIS).

Employment requirements include: 

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with course work in planning or a related field of study
  • Considerable experience with North Carolina Erosion Control and Sediment plans and zoning administration and code enforcement services.
  • Two years of professional experience in administration and enforcement of local government ordinances and regulations is strongly preferred.
  • CZO Certification is preferred.
  • Flood plain manager (CFM) certification is preferred.
