The National Weather Service has issued the following Special Weather Statement for Greater Rutherford NC-Polk Mountains NC-Rutherford Mountains NC- Eastern Polk NC-Northern Spartanburg SC- 425 PM EDT Tue Jul 19 2022.

  • A strong thunderstorm will impact portions of southern Rutherford, Polk and north central Spartanburg Counties through 500 PM EDT.
  • At 424 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 6 miles north of Columbus, or 6 miles south of Lake Lure, moving southeast at 30 mph.
  • HAZARD: Wind gusts up to 40 mph and half-inch hail.
  • SOURCE: Radar indicated.
  • IMPACT: Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include... Columbus, Rutherfordton, Lake Lure, Lake Bowen, Chimney Rock State Park, Mill Spring, Green Creek, Harris, Lake Adger and Fingerville.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS: If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
