Round Top Mountain and Surrounding Area

December 7, 2021

On Tuesday morning, December 7, 2021, the Lake Lure Fire Department responded to a fire near Round Top Mountain between the Broad River and the Chimney Rock State Park land.  The initial fire crew quickly began addressing the fire while calling for back-up. 

All surrounding Fire Departments responded, including Bat Cave, Bills Creek, Broad River, Chimney Rock, and Fairfield Mountains. Helicopters were utilized to transport water from Lake Lure to help address the situation. All surrounding fire agencies are working together to extinguish the fire as soon as possible. As of 3:39 PM the fire is estimated at 80% contained.

The Lake Lure Fire Department would like to remind citizens that there is currently a Burn Ban in existence in North Carolina.     

Updates will be provided as soon as additional information becomes available. 

December 7, 2021 Update: Fire Chief Dustin Waycaster advises that crews are still working to oversee this incident.  Having rain overnight was very helpful in containing the fire.  He acknowledged the efforts and teamwork of Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, Broad River, Garren Creek, Enka, Skyland, Columbus , and Etawah Fire Departments worked with the NC Forestry Service to address the fire.
