Town Council Special Meeting Summary - August 22nd, 2024
The Lake Lure Town Council held a special meeting on Thursday, August 22nd, 2024 at 8:30 a.m.
- The meeting was held at the Lake Lure Municipal Center (Town Hall) at 2948 Memorial Highway, Lake Lure, NC 28746.
- The following is a summary of the meeting for those who could not attend.
- Note that these are not formal minutes which will be included in the following month's meeting packet.
I. Call to Order
Mayor Carol Pritchett called the meeting to order.
II. Agenda Adoption
The agenda was adopted as posted.
III. Discuss Future Lake Drawdowns with Ruby-Collins and LaBella Associates
- There was a discussion about how best strategy to proceed with the sewer system project based on the exorbitant increase in costs that have been presented.
- Brian Houston with Labella and Gary Johanik from Ruby Collins attended the meeting and provided input.
- Public Services Director Dean Lindsey participated in the discussion.
- There was a lengthy discussion regarding the best options to move the sewer system project forward during the next drawdown and beyond.
- Mr. Houston will make contact with Schnabel Engineering to discuss "attachment" to the dam.
- One priority will be a detailed inspection of the pipes and manholes during the 20-foot drawdown in the winter of 2025.
- There was a discussion about working to complete the system in Sunset Cove. Approximately half of the cove was previously completed.
- There was a conversation about how best to address the sewer system in the other coves throughout the lake.
- One possibility that was considered was using a combination of the Gravity Lift System (GLS) and a Low-Pressure System (LPS) approach.
- Some additional dredging will be required during the drawdown to uncover existing pipes for inspection.
- The next steps would be to identify the locations where we want to expand the project in 2025-26 so the surveyors and inspections can be more focused during the drawdown.
- LaBella will draft a Task Order to propose their recommended work plan based on today's discussion.
