Preparing for Potential Snow and Ice
Town of Lake Lure crews are putting down chat in preparation for potential snow and ice this week. Chat is a mixture of sand and magnesium chloride, used for both de-icing and increasing traction on slick surfaces. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is also out putting down brine to treat roads before winter storms to lower the freezing point of pavement. This makes it easier to plow snow and ice.
The National Weather Service is predicting mixed precipitation with total snow accumulations up to 3 inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze in the North Carolina Mountains.
