PATCHY BLACK ICE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP EARLY FRIDAY MORNING ON UNTREATED ROADWAYS

The following update is from the National Weather Service at 5:18 PM EST Thursday, January 20, 2022.

Runoff from light rain this afternoon and additional snow melt, especially in normally shady locations, will leave behind wet spots that could freeze into patches of black ice on untreated roadways across the region late tonight and early Friday. Temperatures will fall below freezing across the mountains this evening. Colder air will move in across the rest of the area overnight, with temperatures falling below freezing across the foothills and western Piedmont of North Carolina by 3 or 4 AM, and across extreme northeast Georgia, Upstate South Carolina, and the Charlotte metro area between 4 am and sunrise.

Temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the day across the mountains, the foothills and western Piedmont of North Carolina, the Charlotte metro area, and the northern Upstate.

Temperatures are expected to climb just above freezing across northeast Georgia, the western Upstate including Greenville and Anderson, and the lower Piedmont of South Carolina in the late morning to early afternoon. Temperatures will fall back below freezing around sunset.

Lake Lure's Town Hall will have a delayed opening tomorrow at 12:00 PM, Friday, January 21, 2022 Town roads have been plowed but please be cautious of black ice if you are traveling.
