Mayor Pritchett Honors the Years of Service of Mary Karr

Mayor Carol Pritchett presented Mary Karr with the following proclamation in the presence of her family and friends on January 31, 2024 at Town Hall.

 

PROCLAMATION HONORING THE DEDICATED SERVICE OF

MARY KARR

 

          WHEREAS, Mrs. Mary Karr and her family moved to Lake Lure from Wisconsin in 1980 and she and her family have made a remarkable impact on the community.  We are all fortunate that such an exceptionally talented and dedicated woman made Lake Lure her home;

          WHEREAS, Mary Karr, being of strong faith, joined the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration where she has been an active member for over forty years, serving on the alter guild and bringing exquisitely arranged flowers each month through out these years.

 

WHEREAS, when Mary Karr, being an educator herself, learned that there was no library for the community, she worked diligently with others in the area to build support for a future library.  Mary Karr purchased books herself and established a mechanism for the community to have access to quality literature; and

 

          WHEREAS, Mary Karr worked with citizens in the community in the eighties to form the Friends of the Library organization, to expand the support for a Library for the community. With Mary Karr’s tireless leadership and the support of the Friends of the Library, the Mountains Branch Library was opened in 1990 and remains a thriving resource for the community; The Friends of the Mountains Branch Library, a non-profit organization she helped form, continues to support exemplary educational programming for the region today with book clubs and author presentations to genealogy courses, clogging classes, quilting guilds, cooking demonstrations, cultural awareness events, crafting, and innumerable educational opportunities for children.

 

          WHEREAS, Mary Karr, a former Art Teacher and a talented artist herself, again brought other likeminded individuals together to help found the Lake Lure Artist group in the eighties. The Lake Lure Artists also remains a thriving organization to this day with painters, sculptors, fiber artists, photographers, potters, and jewelry makers all meeting monthly to share and expand their knowledge of art; Mary Karr, being a talented author, continues to be a steadfast contributor to the Mountain Breeze, writing articles featuring art and highlighting Lake Lure Artists for 25 years. 

 

WHEREAS, Mary Karr enjoyed outdoor activities and helped to form the Lake Lure Ladies 9 Hole Golf League.  The group remains active to this day.  Mary Karr was also instrumental in helping to create the Lake Lure Bridge Club, a social group which continues to meet regularly.

 

WHEREAS, Mary Karr’s husband Alex Karr was elected to the Lake Lure Town Council in 1985 and served 2 terms, she worked diligently to support all Town priorities.  She was a founding member of the Lake Lure Beautification Committee before Town staff were hired to oversee these efforts.  She and other like-minded individuals worked together to add beauty to the area with plants and flowers.  She was involved in the planning of Morse Park with others in the community and this Park now brings joy to countless residents and visitors each year.

 

          WHEREAS, the number of activities and endeavors Mary Karr spearheaded and engaged in over the years are far too numerous to mention.  Mary Karr has significantly contributed to the overall culture, splendor, and enjoyment of the Lake Lure community, our residents and all those who visit; now

 

          NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Carol C. Pritchett on behalf of the Lake Lure Town Council and the citizens of the Town of Lake Lure, hereby present this Proclamation to express deep and sincere appreciation for Mary Karr’s dedicated service to the Lake Lure Community.
