Retiring American Flags

Folded, Retired Flags

The Lake Lure Police Department (LLPD) started accepting retired flags about four years ago when the American Legion had to pull their drop box from the front of the Town Hall.  A local resident built the Police Department a discard box.  On Flag Day in 2019 in a small ceremony our local Boy Scouts assisted the department in a flag burning ceremony and buried the ashes.

Last year during the pandemic the office was closed for several months and people in the community were not able to get out to bring their flags to the drop box.  Since the beginning of this year (2021) the flag box quickly became full.  The Police Department had to move the current flags from the box to allow for more to be brought in.  In doing this, we discovered many flags were unfolded, torn and tattered.   Before putting them away to wait for the next ceremony, each was opened and refolded with the utmost care and respect by Kat Canant, Administrative Assistant for the Police Department.

The LLPD will plan a ceremony next year on Flag Day.  The community is welcome to bring their torn, tattered and faded flags into the Police Department anytime and place them in the box where they will await for the ceremony.
