Lake Lure Storm Recovery Utilities Update - 10/22/24

Road Repair Below Dam

The Town of Lake Lure Public Works crews have been working around the clock to make emergency repairs and restore utilities to Lake Lure following the devastation of Hurricane Helene.

Some of the Town's wells received significant damage during the storm but crews were able to make repairs enabling water to be restored throughout the community last week.  All water quality samples have since been returned, enabling the Town to lift the boil advisory fully.

Repairing the sewer system is among the Town’s top priorities. As we have shared in our daily updates, unfortunately, the system sustained multifaceted damage during the hurricane. Town crews have been working with our sewer system engineers at LaBella Associates (and other contractors) to complete the complex repairs as quickly as possible. The Town is also working closely with the Department of Environmental Quality on all issues and we are following their guidance as the system is fully restored.

The following are the specific repairs that have been underway:

1) The road below the dam was washed out by the hurricane and has been rebuilt, enabling access to the Lift Station.  (See the photo of the road here.)

2) The electrical system in the Waste Water Treatment Plant was damaged and has been rebuilt.

3) The hurricane damaged the main sewer line and lift station which are being repaired as quickly as possible.

4) The Town is working on an emergency bypass system which will enable the sewer system to work.

5) The design for the permanent station has been received and implemented.

Again, this issue is among our highest priorities for the Town. We are continuing efforts to restore the system as quickly as possible and will provide additional information as progress continues. We appreciate everyone's patience as crews work through the complex issues.
